Ninja and Stealth Science

November 30th, 2005 | Ninja Wednesday

This is the description of the course that K's truly awesome brother is teaching:

We will cover topics in anatomy, physics, health, urban planning, and psychology as we learn safe ways to fall out of trees, scale buildings, move without being seen, and travel fluidly and quickly through the urban environment.

The physical techniques involved come mostly from parkour (which is also called ‘freerunning’ or urban acrobatics), contact improvisation, aikido, laban movement analysis, and ninjitsu.

The science curriculum includes the mechanics of elastic and inelastic collisions, rotational inertia, coefficients of rolling and standing friction, leverage & torque, statics & structural analysis, as well as skeletal, muscular, and joint anatomy, focusing on the shoulders, spine, ankles, knees, hips, and core.

Mathematics will vary based on the background and interest
of each student, but will include notions from geometry, algebra, and calculus, as they relate to the human body in motion.

Our first unit is on dropping from trees.

While visiting your sister in London last summer, there was a BBC special about young men doing the whole creative climbing/ministery of funny walks- Monty Pythonesque no-skateboard-but-as-if-I-were-on-one moves. K’s brother must be the coolest.
