A little bird showed me

September 29th, 2005 | All the rest

Walking home from work, I pass a bit of wasteland in front of an electric company power station. As I reached the edge of the plot today, two dozen little brown birds rose up out of the grass in unison and perched on the chainlink fence surrounding the transformers. Once I was a few feet beyond, they flew back down en masse and resumed pecking for food.

A jogger passed, heading in the direction of the birds. I turned and watched, hoping to see the mini-migration take place again. Maybe he was moving too quickly, but the birds didn't make the same effort as he went by. Or maybe they knew he wouldn't stop to notice them.
